DirtBags : A Reusable, Compostable Alternative to Single‑Use Running Fuel Packets
For years, runners have watched gel packets, chew wrappers and single‑use plastic sachets pile up on trails and roadsides. Even when they’re disposed of properly, they head straight to landfill after one use — an expensive, wasteful system that doesn’t sit well with many runners who care about the places they move through.
One runner decided to fix that.

After two and a half years of prototyping, testing and small‑batch manufacturing, DirtBags have arrived — a simple, practical idea designed to cut plastic waste and make fuelling cheaper and more accessible. Created by For The Trail, a grassroots environmental running project, DirtBags are purpose‑made reusable packets for gels, powders, chews and homemade fuel mixes.
The Small DirtBag is the world’s first reusable single‑serve fuel packet. Instead of tearing open a plastic gel and binning it after one squeeze, runners can refill a DirtBag with bulk‑bought or homemade nutrition, wash it out after use, and pack it again for the next run. It offers the same convenience and precise fuelling control as traditional gels — without the waste or the cost.
The Large DirtBag works as a reusable gear organiser, ideal for storing empty Small DirtBags or carrying bulk snacks.
Both versions are home‑compostable, and their production demands far fewer resources than conventional plastic packets. For runners looking to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing convenience, they offer a genuinely practical alternative.
To support the launch, For The Trail has also released the Sustainable Fuel Guide, a detailed resource showing how runners can create effective, affordable fuelling strategies using bulk ingredients or homemade mixes — “fuel like a pro at a fraction of the price,” as the guide puts it.
